Harnesses

Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve purchased multiple harnesses for my Bostons and some are easier to get on than others, but those are the same ones my girls like to play Houdini with.

What’s a good source/video that shows you how to properly fit and adjust the harness to your dog? My girls are just like people- they have completely different body types for being the same breed and two weeks apart in age. Sunny (my chunky girl) doesn’t take much effort to get a snug fit- she’s kinda shaped like a cinder block, and has a larger, more square shaped head. Estelle is my dainty looking psycho with a trim waist and smaller head and gets so excited when she sees the harness or leash she can’t stop squirming.

It sounds like you have two very different body types to accommodate, which can make harness fitting tricky! The key is to find a well-adjusted harness that provides both security and comfort. Here are a few resources and tips:

1. Finding the Right Fit:

  • The two-finger rule: You should be able to fit two fingers between the harness and your dog’s body—snug but not too tight.

  • Adjust for body shape: Some harnesses have multiple adjustment points (neck, chest, and belly), which can help fit different builds.

  • Escape-proof designs: Look for a harness with a Y-shape or three-strap design for more security, especially for escape artists like Estelle.

2. Helpful Videos & Guides:

3. Harness Recommendations Based on Your Dogs' Builds:

  • For Sunny (Stocky Build): A step-in harness with a broad chest panel might be easiest to put on. Look for options with adjustable girth to ensure a snug fit.

  • For Estelle (Slim, Excitable Build): A dual-clip harness with a belly strap (like the Ruffwear Flagline or the 3-strap Rabbitgoo Tactical) can help prevent her from slipping out when she’s wiggly.
