1. Socialization Sands
Location: Smyrna Dunes Park
Description: Explore the expansive Smyrna Dunes Park with walking trails and sandy areas.
- Perfect for socialization, long-leash obedience, and meeting other dogs and owners against the backdrop of beautiful dunes and the Atlantic Ocean.
- The park is open from dawn to dusk and its always busy. (Paid Parking)
- It is one of my favorite spots to work on dog reactivity as there are always dogs coming and going.
- Be Aware on Friday afternoon and the weekends, the parking lot may be full. Once one car leaves, one car is allowed to enter when at capacity.
- Boardwalk is a 1.5-mile loop that closes at 10:00 A.M to dogs.
- There are leash laws when you are on the beach, do not take your dog off leash and be aware of other that may break that rule and keep your space unless you're comfortable.
2. Obedience Oasis
Location: Riverside Park
Description: Riverside Park offers a serene setting for obedience training.
- Utilize the park's open spaces, walking paths, and pavilions for leash training, basic commands, and reinforcing good behavior.
- There are various types of docks to expose your dog to different surfaces.
- Always people fishing which can be a great distraction depending on your issues!
- The park is open at night, and the civic center is viewing distance has many events in the evenings!
- The children's playground can be a great "agility" course for your dog but be sure to go there at hours where nobody else is there to be respectful!
3. Distraction Drive
Location: Canal Street Historic District
Description: Train in the bustling Canal Street area, surrounded by shops and restaurants.
- This location is ideal for desensitizing dogs to urban stimuli, helping them stay focused amidst crowds and various distractions.
- Most of the restaurants in this area are dog friendly!
- Give your dog a place command on a bench and hang out for a bit on the strip.
4. Fearless Field
Location: Turnbull Bay Sports Complex
Description: Turnbull Bay Sports Complex provides open fields away from common disturbances.
- A quiet area for working with dogs dealing with fear or anxiety, allowing them to build confidence surrounded by minimal distractions.
- This area can be busy on weekends and on Friday nights during football season.
- Use the benches, bleachers, park equipment, and fencing like you would during "agility" training and have your dog's confidence skyrocket!
5. Canine Confidence Corner
Location: The Club at Venetian Bay
Description: Explore the quiet residential area around Venetian Bay.
- This neighborhood is perfect for building your dog's confidence in a tranquil environment, suitable for shy or anxious dogs.
- The road up and down the main strip is a great area to work on leash manners, building confidence, and meeting people to work on interactions.
- If you travel a little north from the clubhouse, you will hit the town center, with restaurants, shopping, and apartments where you should find plenty of people and dogs.
6. Recall Ridge
Location: Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Preserve (Creek Shore Trail)
Description: The trails and open spaces at Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Preserve provide a scenic backdrop for recall training.
- Practice coming when called amidst the preserve's natural beauty, with various distances and distractions.
- There are generally always a few off-leash dogs in this area so use caution if you are concerned. Majority of them are all well behaved thankfully. Always be prepared though.
- This is a very popular disc golf course so pay attention and make sure you're not in the middle of the course when training.
- Horses are allowed of the trails, please keep your dogs on a long leash.
- Be cautious of people on mountain bikes riding the trails.
7. Behavior Beach
Location: Flagler Avenue
Description: Flagler Avenue is a picturesque setting for addressing water-related behaviors.
- Enjoy a day at the beach to build water confidence and work on behaviors with the soothing sound of the waves from a distance. (Dogs are not allowed on the beach in this area.)
- Most of the shops and restaurants are dog friendly on the strip and have bowls out with water.
- The ice cream shop has pup cups to build a positive association with that kind of environment.
8. Manners Meadow
Location: New Smyrna Beach Pedestrian Trail
Description: The green space along the New Smyrna Beach Pedestrian Trail is a quiet path for reinforcing good manners and polite behavior.
- Ideal for practicing polite greetings with other dogs and people.
- Lots of bikes and disc golf players along the way.
- The path will bring you to several different areas to train throughout the city along the way.
- It ends at Sugar Mill Drive, near the cemetery.
9. Agility Alley (Dog Park)
Location: New Smyrna Beach Dog Park
Description: The New Smyrna Beach Dog Park is a designated dog-friendly park with play equipment.
- It's the ultimate spot for dogs to burn off energy, socialize, and enjoy a playful atmosphere.
- The dog park offers a dedicated space for agility training.
- Set up an agility course using the park's features, incorporating jumps, tunnels, and other obstacles to enhance your dog's physical fitness and mental sharpness.
- Please use the dog park at your discretion and please be careful of nuisance dogs.
- I do not utilize dog parks, but I will train outside of the park using the dogs as a distraction during my training.
