1. Socialization Square
Location: Spruce Creek Park (All Childrens Park)
Description: A spacious park with walking trails and open spaces.
- Great for socialization, off-leash play, and meeting other dogs and owners.
- The park provides a natural environment for positive interactions.
- There is a fenced in dog park at this location, use it at your discretion but please be careful of nuisance dogs.
- I do not utilize dog parks, but I will train outside of the park, walking up and down the sidewalk on Spruce Creek Road to use the dogs as a distraction during my training!
2. Obedience Oasis
Location: Port Orange City Center
Description: The open areas around City Center offer a controlled environment for obedience training.
- I like to start with a long leash, allowing the dog to explore and use its nose. Break the dogs focus, and reward for the positive behavior.
- The long leash works great to practice your recall and other commands at a distance with tons of distractions around!
- Use the Amphitheater, Rec Center, library, YMCA, Palmer and nearby spaces for leash training, basic commands, and reinforcing good behavior.
- There's almost always something going on here, no matter the time of day.
- The recreation areas are very busy at nights during sport seasons.
3. Distraction Drive
Location: Dunlawton Avenue/ Taylor Branch
Description: Train in the busy commercial area around Dunlawton Avenue.
- This location is perfect for desensitizing dogs to traffic, pedestrians, and various urban stimuli, helping them focus in high-distraction environments.
- Use the entryways of the different stores for people distractions, the entryways of off of Dunlawton for car distractions.
- This area is always busy but be careful of drivers not paying attention.
4. Fearless Trail
Location: Coraci Park Trail
Description: The trail near Airport Road, off Town West provides a quiet area away from common disturbances.
- Ideal for working with dogs dealing with fear or anxiety, allowing them to build confidence at their own pace.
- The Trail leads to the Coraci Sports Complex, which is a great environment to practice indirection socialization to people and noises.
- Use the benches, bleachers, park equipment, and fencing like you would during "agility" training and have your dog's confidence skyrocket!
5. Agility Alley
Location: Buschman Park
Description: Buschman Park is a great space for agility training.
- There is a long straight path right along the canal that would be great to set up your own obstacle course that you can order online and travel with.
- Set up an "agility course" with the exercise stations as you walk around the pond, incorporating place commands, jumps, crawls, and other obstacles to enhance your dog's physical fitness and mental sharpness.
6. Canine Confidence Corner
Location: Airport Road Park
Description: Explore the quiet residential area around Waters Edge Boulevard and Creekside Middle School.
- This is an excellent spot for building your dog's confidence in a low-stress environment, particularly suitable for shy or anxious dogs.
- Great area for training if your dog struggles to focus around children.
- Plenty of space to create distance if needed.
7. Recall Ridge
Location: Spruce Creek Park & Campground
Description: The trails and open spaces at Spruce Creek Park & Campground provide a picturesque setting for recall training.
- Practice coming when called amidst the natural beauty, with various distances and distractions. (use a long leash)
- 536-foot boardwalk leading to a 15-foot observation tower.
- Nature trails throughout the park to practice recall in numerous areas, with minimal distractions.
8. Behavior Beach
Location: Port Orange Causeway Park
Description: Port Orange Causeway Park along the Halifax River is perfect for addressing water-related behaviors.
- Enjoy a waterfront location to build water confidence and work on behaviors in a serene setting.
- A couple of different types of docks to walk across, including floating docks.
- Boats, and lots of noises from the cars traveling on the bridge above.
- Walk down towards US1 from the parking lot under the bridge and there will be a few openings on your right side where you can work on getting into the water and you won't have to worry about any deep drops.
- Great spot to teach your dog to ride on a kayak!
9. Manners Meadow
Location: Riverwalk Park
Description: The green space at Riverwalk Park is a busy meadow for reinforcing good manners and polite behavior.
- Ideal for practicing polite greetings with other dogs and people.
- Great area for long leash obedience training and exposure to children where you can easily keep your distance.
- Splash pad inside of the park.
